A man has been charged following an accident that left a 20-year-old woman seriously injured

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – The Knoxville Police Department said Thursday morning that a Knoxville man facing charges in connection with a crash that seriously injured a 20-year-old woman on Wednesday evening will likely face additional charges .

According to the press release shared by KPD, Matthew the ChristianThe 49-year-old was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident. The accident occurred on Wednesday, May 29 on Middlebrook Pike at Amherst Road. KPD officers arrived at the scene around 7:15 p.m


Witnesses told officers that a white Vespa moped driven by a woman was traveling east on Middlebrook Pike and was stopped at the Amherst Road stoplight when it was struck by a gray Dodge Charger. The woman was thrown from the moped onto the road, and the driver of the Charger, later identified as Christian, fled the scene before KPD officers arrived.

The woman was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, another KPD officer spotted a gray Dodge Charger traveling west on Middlebrook Pike and officers stopped the car along Middlebrook at Dick Lonas Road. According to KPD, the front of the car had “noticeable accident-related damage,” while driver Christian allegedly showed numerous signs of being under the influence.

KPD found that after further investigation, Christian had a prior DUI conviction from May 2021. He was arrested. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and as of Thursday morning, the woman’s condition was unknown, other than serious injuries.
