(Update: the man’s name has been released)

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – Police responding to a welfare check request on the north end of Bend found a man’s body in a ditch off Highway 97 Thursday morning, prompting a suspicious death investigation, police said.

After notifying family members Thursday evening, they identified the man as David Carroll Hickman, 62, of Bend.

Officers responded shortly before 9:30 a.m. to a requested welfare check in the 3300 block of North U.S. Highway 97, Sheila Miller, Bend police communications manager, said Thursday.

When officers arrived, they found Hickman’s body in a ditch west of the Pacific Pride gas station, she added.

“The man’s death is being investigated as suspicious at this time,” Miller said.

Miller told NewsChannel 21 that officers cordoned off the area for the investigation and called the Oregon State Police Forensic Division and the medical examiner.

Officers contacted nearby businesses to see if anyone in the area had witnessed anything unusual, she added. They will also look for surveillance video from local businesses.

We will have more information once it is released by the authorities.
