RETURN TO BLUE: historic street markers bring life back to life

The iconic blue tiles have been part of Houston’s history for over a century. After years of neglect and destruction, a passionate Houstonian is redoing the street markers.

Houston, Texas — Iconic blue and white mosaic tiles are returning to Houston neighborhoods. Eric Maier of I Heart Houston is at the origin of this revival.

“You can still go there and see 4,000 originals floating around Houston at different intersections,” Maier said. “Some are in very good shape, others in quite terrible condition.”

The iconic blue tiles have been a part of Houston’s history since the early 20th century. Over the years, the original tiles have been neglected or destroyed.

Joey Sanchez started the Blue Tile Project to document existing road markings. Maier said he worked with Sánchez to perfect the reproduction of the tiles.

“I hope one day we can have all the curbs and all the houses with original Houston blue tiles,” Maier said.
