Sleeping woman killed by bullets flying over Gastonia home, family says – WSOC TV

GASTONIA, N.C. – Someone fired dozens of shots at a Gastonia home late Monday night, killing a woman inside.

The incident happened just before midnight on Morgan Street, near Union Road. Channel 9’s Ken Lemon learned that half a dozen children were inside at the time, but fortunately they were unharmed.

The woman’s family and friends said 39-year-old Latasha Cureton died. The police and his family are now looking for answers.

Lemon caught up with officers going door-to-door from the scene of the shooting, hoping to find anyone who may have seen, heard or recorded something helpful.

The family said everyone was upset with Cureton, who was also a mother. They said she was sleeping in her bed when the shooting started. The bullet hit her bedroom window, killing her.

The one in the window glass is one of dozens of bullet holes that family members showed Lemon. One shot hit a children’s playpen, the other hit a sofa where six children were watching a movie with their grandmother.

13 shots were fired at or through the front door. You can look through the holes and see outside.

A family friend said there was no safe place in the house when the shooting started.

“Everyone should know there are a lot of children living in this house,” Keith Rice said. “And for someone to shoot so many times, or even just at home, is ridiculous. These people are wicked.”

Lemon talked to her grandmother, who was home when the shooting began. She said Cureton is her daughter and best friend. She said she didn’t know why anyone would do that, but pleaded with the shooter to turn himself in.
