A flood warning is in effect for all of South Florida through Wednesday evening, but may be extended further as heavy rain is likely to continue through at least Friday.

On Tuesday, a ground stop was announced at Miami International Airport from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. due to the storm.

“Due to severe thunderstorms in Miami-Dade this morning, some flights at Miami International Airport were delayed or canceled, and more are expected as the day progresses,” the airport said in a statement. “Travellers are asked to confirm their flight status with their airline before arriving at MIA so that they can make alternative travel arrangements from their home or hotel if necessary and avoid potential traffic congestion and severe weather conditions at or near the airport.”

Both Miami International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International expect occasional ground stops and delays during the rainy season.

Over the next four days, intermittent periods of rain will be accompanied by periods of heavy downpours. Rainfall totals are expected to range from 4 to 8 inches through Saturday, with locally higher amounts possible in areas experiencing persistent, heavy rainfall.

The deepest tropical moisture will begin to dissipate over the weekend, leaving more of the typical wet season rainfall on Sunday.
