Teenager charged in connection with May shooting

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Earlier this week, an Odessa teenager was arrested on a warrant in connection with a May shooting that left one person injured. Damian Zane Escobedo, 19, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, officers were called to the 2700 block of Keystone on May 13 after shots were fired in the area. At the scene, officers observed a black Chevrolet Silverado speeding from the area with its hazard lights activated; Investigators followed the truck to Medical Center Hospital, where they learned that a 44-year-old man had been shot in the hip and chest.

During the subsequent investigation, officers learned that the victim had been involved in a fight in the 2700 block of Chestnut just prior to the shooting. Investigators said surveillance footage showed a group of people fighting in the street; The suspect, later identified as Escobedo, was then seen on camera running into his home and exiting with a firearm, which he then fired at the victim.

Based on evidence, including a 9 mm bullet casing found at the scene, officers applied for an arrest warrant for Escobedo, and he was arrested on June 10. Jail records show Escobedo was released from the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on $25,000 bond.
