Police chase Gwinnett County: One dead after Atlanta, Georgia officers chase hijacked transit bus on I-85 into DeKalb County

ATLANTA — According to WSB, one person is dead after Atlanta police chased a hijacked public transit bus Tuesday afternoon after a fight broke out and someone drove away in the vehicle.

The incident occurred at 45 Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard. Multiple Atlanta police officers joined in the pursuit of a Gwinnett County Transit bus near Spaghetti Junction.

At one point, all lanes of Interstate 85 were closed as officers tried to figure out how to stop the bus.

The bus eventually turned onto Jimmy Carter Boulevard after officers threw spikes that appeared to damage the tires.

It is unclear whether anyone on the bus was armed or if anyone was injured.

Multiple officers surrounded the bus as it turned onto Hugh Howell Road in DeKalb County. A SWAT vehicle appears to be directly in front of him. Georgia State Patrol, DeKalb County Police and Atlanta Police are responding to the incident.

It is unclear whether the bus driver was driving the vehicle or someone else was driving.

Police said the adult victim who was shot was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

The suspect, a 39-year-old man, was arrested.

All lanes of I-85 have reopened.
