Four American university lecturers were stabbed in a shocking attack in a Chinese park

Four lecturers at a prestigious American university were stabbed in a public park in China.

When the attack occurred, the group, all of whom teach at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, was traveling to visit a partner institution, Beihua University.

An attacker “brutally attacked” staff at a liberal arts college with a knife as they walked in a park in the northern Chinese city of Jilin.

Jonathan Brand, the university’s chancellor, said: “We have been in contact with all four instructors and are assisting them during this time.”

The US Department of State is aware of the incident and assures that it is monitoring the situation, he added. He also added that no student participated in the program.

Chinese police said a 55-year-old man was arrested following the attack.

Photos and videos appeared on social media showing several people lying on the ground, soaked in blood. However, news about the incident in China was heavily censored.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters at his daily news conference today: “Police initially assessed that it was an accidental incident, but an investigation is ongoing.

“All injured people were immediately taken to hospital and received appropriate care, no one’s life is in danger.”

Iowa State Representative Adam Zanber confirmed that his brother was among the victims.

He said: “My brother David was wounded in the arm in a knife attack while visiting a temple in Jilin, China.

“I spoke to David… He’s recovering from his injuries and doing well. “My family is incredibly grateful that David survived this attack.”

In response to the incident, Congressional Representative Ashley Hinson wrote on social media on Monday: “I am horrified that multiple Cornell College faculty members were brutally stabbed in China. My team has made contact with Cornell College and will do everything we can to bring Iowans home safely. Please join me in praying for their health and safety.”

Gov. Kim Reynolds said she is “in contact with Iowa’s federal delegation and the Department of State in response to this horrific attack. Please pray for their full recovery, safe return and their families here at home.”

It is not yet clear whether the instructor was specifically targeted.

The partnership between the two institutions began in 2018, and as part of the agreement, Beihua University is funding a two-week trip for Cornell professors to China.
