Man charged with rape after attacking woman on Dewsbury Street

A man has been charged with rape after a woman was attacked in a street in Dewsbury.

Amanat Ali Tariq, 42, of Wellington Road East, Dewsbury, will appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court tomorrow charged with rape, assault under s. 18, two crimes of attempted rape and two crimes of fraud and theft.



The offenses concern an attack on a woman that took place on June 9 in the early morning hours. Mr Tariq was arrested by West Yorkshire Police and charged with these offences.

The victim is currently in the custody of specially trained officers and Tariq remains in police custody. In a statement, a police spokesman said: “A man is due to appear before magistrates after being charged in connection with a serious sexual offense in Dewsbury.

“Amanat Ali Tariq, of Wellington Road East, Dewsbury, will appear before the morning session of Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, June 12, charged with rape and other offences. They include two offenses of attempted rape and assault under Art. 18, two offenses of fraud and theft.

“A 42-year-old man has been detained to appear in court after being arrested and charged in connection with the serious sexual assault of a woman which occurred in the early hours of Sunday 9 June.

“The victim continues to receive support from specially trained officers and the Homicide and Serious Investigation Team continues to investigate the incident.”
