Veronica Lewis charged with aggravated assault after attacking a fellow inmate

A woman convicted of attempted second-degree murder was charged after police said she attacked a sleeping cellmate last month. Vermont State Police said Veronica Lewis, 40, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon after she used a facility-issued handgun. a tablet and a zipper placed in a sock to attack a fellow inmate at Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility. Investigators say Lewis attacked 52-year-old Yvonne Frederiksen on May 29 just before 5 a.m. while Frederiksen was sleeping. According to police, Frederiksen was seriously injured in the attack and was sent to the University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment before being returned to prison. Lewis is currently serving a sentence for attempted second-degree murder after she tried to kill her firearms instructor in 2015. Lewis is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 1 to answer to an aggravated assault charge.
