COLLETON COUNTY, SCSC (WCBD) – A man has been sentenced in connection with a hunting shooting that occurred on New Year’s Day 2020 that left a father and his 9-year-old daughter dead.

According to the SCDNR Department of Natural Resources, Sean Peterson, 33, pleaded guilty to two counts of negligent discharge of a firearm while hunting. He was sentenced to five years in prison and four years’ probation after serving his sentence.

“Peterson fired upon hearing a noise coming from the bushes, without identifying the target,” SCDNR wrote in X. The Colleton County Coroner identified the victims in that shooting as 9-year-old Lauren Drawdy and 30-year-old Kim Drawdy.

Previous reports indicated that four hunters were trying to transport the deer, also called buck deer, on Barracada Road in Walterboro when two of them, later identified as Drawda’s, were shot after being mistaken for a deer.

Peterson was arrested in July 2020 in connection with a fatal crash by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.

“We express our gratitude for the diligent work of our officers, investigators, assisting agencies and prosecutors in this case,” SCDNR said.
