A garda investigation is underway following a fire in the crypt of St Irish Church. Michana in Dublin.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 4.30 on Tuesday afternoon.

It is known that many mummified remains were destroyed as a result of the fire.

The fire was extinguished by Dublin Fire Brigade and the area was secured. No injuries have been reported at this time.

A man was arrested for an alleged offense under the Criminal Damages Act 1991 in connection with the incident and is currently in custody under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the Dublin area.

The scene has been secured and a team from the Garda Technical Bureau is currently carrying out forensic examinations.

“The investigation is ongoing,” a Garda spokesman said.
